The ground
It starts with the surface. Linen or board, toned warm, so the first marks already sit in a certain light rather than on bare white.
Paintings that hold the light a little longer. Original works, commissions and exhibitions.
I paint the kind of light that lingers after the day has gone. I work in oil, acrylic and mixed media, laying thin glaze over thin glaze until a surface starts to hold its own quiet.
I came to it the slow way, repainting the same few things until they stopped lying to me. The work is calmer now, and surer of itself.
Every painting is built slowly, in thin layers. There is no rushing the light into a surface. This is roughly how a piece comes together.
It starts with the surface. Linen or board, toned warm, so the first marks already sit in a certain light rather than on bare white.
Then glaze over glaze, each layer almost transparent. The colour is not painted on so much as allowed to gather, until the surface holds its own quiet.
The hardest part is leaving it alone. A piece is done when the light feels lived in, not arranged. Usually that is a few weeks, and a lot of looking.

Every option begins with a short conversation. Tell me the wall, the light and the feeling, and we will find the rest.
